The decision to play a newly-drafted quarterback or the seasoned veteran can be a tough decision for any head coach in the NFL. When it comes to Justin Fields, though, analyst Cris Collinsworth believes it’s a no-brainer.
Speaking with Pro Football Focus, Collinsworth said he wouldn’t hesitate to play Fields right out of the gate in Chicago. He believes the former Buckeye has a chance to learn a lot more by being thrown into the fire as a rookie.
“I would not play Trey Lance next year, I would play Justin Fields in Chicago,” Collinsworth said. “I think that Justin Fields is going to learn more because he only got to play what six games or whatever it was last season, eight I guess with the playoffs and everything. I just look at, he’s a guy who I think I would throw in there right away.”
Head coach Matt Nagy recently told SiriusXM Radio that Andy Dalton is currently the starting quarterback for the Bears. He makes that comment with the season still four months away, which means Fields could still easily be the QB1 in Chicago for a Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Fields has said that the system the Bears run is similar to what he was working with while at Ohio State. As he gets more familiar with his teammates and the staff, the former Buckeye could really start showing signs of being a starting QB in the NFL.
It will still be some time before Nagy makes a permanent decision on his quarterback situation for the first game of the season, which means Fields has plenty of opportunities to be the guy when the Bears open the year.
