The Carolina Panthers have fired head coach Matt Rhule following a 1-4 record in Week 5, the Panthers announced on Monday.

Rhule was the head coach of the Panthers for the last two seasons, leaving behind an 11-27 record.

In the more recent game against the San Francisco 49ers, the Panthers lost 37-15 at home on Sunday. The only game that the Panthers have come out with a victory was in Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints in a 22-14 win.

Rhule was the former Baylor football coach before taking the Panthers role. He was credited with helping put Baylor back on the forefront after the Art Briles scandal. Rhule helped rebound the Baylor Bears from his first season of 1-11 to his last and third season in 2019 to 11-3 (losing in the Big 12 Championship and Sugar Bowl game).

Unfortunately, Rhule was unable to secure that same rebound quality in his time with the Panthers. He will be replaced by defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks, who will take over on an interim basis.
