One of the most interesting items from the 2,000 pages released from Ohio State regarding text messages and emails Urban Meyer sent and received as it relates to former assistant coach Zach Smith is that Nick Saban appears to have offered Smith a job on his Alabama staff.

While on Meyer’s staff at Florida, it appeared as though Smith received an offer to be the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Crimson Tide. However, Saban is providing a different side to the story.

Saban said that he did interview Smith, and that the former Ohio State receivers coach did well in the interview. However, Saban says the job was never really offered.

“I really never did ever offer this guy a job,” Saban said. “We did interview him. … When we did a background check we decided it was better to hire someone else.”

Saban also commented that occasionally assistant coaches will take interviews with other programs as a way for leverage to receive a pay increase.
