Jim Harbaugh is confident it will happen, but it’s not going to be in 2017.

According to the Detroit News, former President Barack Obama and wife Michelle Obama will not be honorary captains for Michigan this season. Despite the offer from the Wolverines’ head coach over the summer, the Obamas were unable to work a game into their busy schedules.

“The president and the First Lady both were as gracious as they could be,” Harbaugh told WXYZ. “They worked very hard to try to come. They’re not going to be able to, unfortunately, make it this year.”

Last Saturday, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter served as the honorary captain in Michigan’s game against Cincinnati. For the Ohio State game at the end of the year, Charles Woodson has agreed to the duty.

Unfortunately for Harbaugh and the Wolverines, they’ll have to wait at least one more year to have a former president serve as a captain. But the head is still optimistic that it will eventually happen.

“It’ll happen,” he said. “It’ll happen someday, I believe.”
