Northwestern is facing an uncertain future with regards to its roster in 2023, according to a report.
The program parted ways with head coach Pat Fitzgerald on Monday night, which means players are able to enter the transfer portal immediately and retain eligibility for the 2023 season.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Northwestern is bracing for that outcome.
“It’s not an overstatement to say the roster and the future of Northwestern football is extremely tenuous,” Thamel said on ESPN Tuesday morning. “Every player on that roster can transfer right now because of the coaching change and can be immediately eligible wherever they go.”
One source reportedly told Thamel that it’s “open season” on Northwestern’s roster.
“There’s an expectation that there could be a flood to the transfer portal,” Thamel added. “And certainly, I had a source text me last night saying it’s ‘open season’ on Northwestern’s roster.”
Northwestern has several players who could be of interest to other Power 5 teams, including linebackers Xander Mueller and Bryce Gallagher.
Northwestern defensive coordinator David Braun is currently serving as acting head coach.
