Northwestern has looked for weeks to hire a special assistant to help interim coach David Braun as the defensive coordinator takes on more responsibilities following the firing of Pat Fitzgerald. Now it appears the school has found its man.
The Wildcats have reportedly agreed in principle to hire Skip Holtz as the special assistant to the head coach for the 2023 season, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported. Holtz’s assignment is temporary and won’t interfere with his USFL job as the head coach of the Birmingham Stallions.
Holtz is most known for working on the staff of his father, Lou, at Notre Dame and South Carolina. He’s been an assistant at the likes of Florida State and Colorado State. But he’s also been the head coach at East Carolina, South Florida, Louisiana Tech and UConn.
Holtz last month was named the 2023 USFL Coach of the Year after the Stallions went a league-best 8-2 and made the playoffs averaging about 29 points per game.
