Hunter Johnson is taking over the reigns for Northwestern at quarterback from the graduated Peyton Ramsey. Johnson is confident he’ll be able to smoothly transition into the role after making five starts as a junior in 2019.
Johnson addressed the media on Aug. 25 and expressed plenty of confidence in his ability to guide the Wildcats.
Here’s a few comments Johnson made on his expectations for the offense and himself:
HJ on the offense: We’re gonna be pretty explosive, we have a lot of talented guys that can catch and run after the catch.

HJ on his growth since 2019: I’ve grown a lot mentally… learned a lot from Coach Jake and Peyton (Ramsey) as well. Going into this season, definitely confident and not my first go around.

HJ: Anything that I do, my parents have told me to see it through, I was doing everything I can to help the team. There’s ups and downs, that’s life, that’s football, I’ve tried to keep plugging away for when my number is called.

The previous starting experience could be an asset as Johnson re-acclimates himself into the role. In six games during the 2019 season, Johnson amassed 432 yards and a touchdown through the air, while rushing for 64 yards and a touchdown.
Johnson transferred to Northwestern from Clemson in 2018.
Johnson will get his first chance to prove himself in the primetime season opener vs. visiting Michigan State on Sept. 3 (9 p.m. EST/ESPN).
