Northwestern’s new stadium will have standing-only student section

Northwestern is putting the finishing touches on Ryan Field, which is set to open this fall.
Media members were given a tour of the new stadium on Wednesday and shared several new details about the venue. Perhaps most interest is that Ryan Field will not have seats in the student section, instead asking fans in that area to stand for the entire game.

Ryan Field will debut on Oct. 2 as Northwestern hosts Penn State. The Wildcats will play their first 2 home games of the year against South Dakota State and Colorado at Martin Stadium.
The new stadium is set to have a capacity of 35,000 fans.
Northwestern football has been building momentum in recent years. The Wildcats have reached the postseason in 2 of the past 3 campaigns, including a 7-6 season in 2025 under head coach David Braun.
As Braun enters Year 4 in Evanston with a new stadium on the horizon, the Wildcats will be hoping to take another step forward in 2026.
Northwestern will open the 2026 season against South Dakota State on Sept. 5.
