Talk about a news dump.

Notre Dame tried to sneak out an announcement that it has agreed to a contract extension with head coach Brian Kelly on Saturday. The school released the official statement DURING the Fighting Irish’s season opener against Duke at the end of the first quarter.

Hilariously enough, Notre Dame trailed Duke 3-0 through the first 15 minutes of the game.

Kelly’s extension will keep him in charge of the Irish through the 2024 season. In the release, Notre Dame said the deal was agreed upon back in December 2019, but had not released the information until Saturday.

“We are pleased to be able to have Brian lead our football program for the foreseeable future,” said Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick. “These terms were agreed upon in December and we planned the subsequent announcement for the Blue-Gold game in April. When the University transitioned to remote learning in March, we decided to wait to make this announcement until we were able to return our attention to football being back in action and I am happy to share this great news today.”

Kelly is entering his 11th season as the head coach at Notre Dame. He’s compiled a 71-36 record during his time in South Bend and has guided the Irish to 9 bowl appearances, as well as a berth in 2012 BCS National Championship Game and a College Football Playoff appearance in 2018.

Notre Dame tried to sneak it past us, but it didn’t work this time.
