Nebraska’s media relations staff might’ve counted its chickens before they hatched.

The Huskers suffered a crushing Hail Mary loss to BYU to kick off the Mike Riley era. Mitch Mathews hauled in a 42-yard prayer as time expired to stun Nebraska.

And perhaps, the media relations staff did not hit “delete” in enough times.

In a postgame release, the notes had this nugget at the top:

“30 –– (if we win)…Nebraska won its season opener for the 30th straight season dating back to a loss to Florida State in 1985. The 30 straight season-opening victories leads the nation.”

The longest streak in the country ended in the worst possible fashion. That wasn’t an association Riley wanted before he got his first Nebraska win.
