Mike Leach is the most entertaining, quirkiest head coach in college football. His willingness to say and do just about anything is precisely the reason everyone across the sport loves him.
So should we really be surprised that the seventh-year Washington State head coach breaks out the leg lamp — made famous by the holiday classic “A Christmas Story”– every season?
Leach posted a photo of the leg lamp in his house over the weekend. That, of course, prompted plenty of questions from reporters when he met with the media. As you might expect, Leach and his kids are huge fans of the decorative lamp. His wife, however, is not.

“She’s got to be coached to pull it out,” Leach said, according to CougFan.com. “She doesn’t like it as much as me and the kids do. That needs to be up year-round as far as I’m concerned.”
Leach says the reason he has the lamp is because “A Christmas Story” is his favorite holiday movie. That, and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” The Cougars head coach also explained why he loved the film so much.
“I think there’s no question,” he said. “That and ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ are the two best ones.”
“It’s like when I was a kid. Kids were running around everywhere. They weren’t screwing around with machines the whole time. There was always the kid in the stiff outfit – it’s just a great movie. I’ve read the book, too, which is more of a long short story.”
Leach made it clear, too, that he’s not the only person who should have a leg lamp. It should be a decoration in every home this time of year.
“I like the leg lamp,” Leach said. “I think everyone should have one.”
