Official trolled after hitting TreVeyon Henderson in the helmet following OSU TD

Ohio State certainly was in need of a wakeup call as the 3rd-ranked Buckeyes sleepwalked their way through the 1st quarter of Saturday’s nationally televised home game against Marshall.

And they got one from a very unlikely source.

Will Howard’s 1-yard touchdown run with 12:31 left in the 2nd quarter gave Ohio State a 13-7 lead, but there was a penalty on the play, so a referee had to get involved. It was a flag on Marshall for having too many men on the field, so naturally the Buckeyes declined the penalty, took the touchdown and finally took a lead after falling behind 7-0 in that forgettable 1st quarter.

While the official was making the declined signal on the penalty, Ohio State senior running back TreVeyon Henderson was innocently jogging off the field. Until Henderson was met with the official’s left arm, which whacked Henderson right on his helmet as he was extending his arm to signal that OSU had declined the penalty.

Fittingly, on an afternoon when the heavily favored Buckeyes started painfully slow, there was a moment right out of the blooper highlight reel after they finally took the lead.

But as it turns out, maybe that ridiculously funny moment was exactly what Ohio State and Henderson needed to kick-start themselves into high gear. Because after that go-ahead touchdown — and the referee-Henderson collision seen around the country — the Buckeyes finally woke up, started scoring points and taking control of the nonconference game at Ohio Stadium.

By halftime, Ohio State had added 2 touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead into the locker room, and the final Buckeye TD of the 2nd quarter came courtesy of — you guessed it — Henderson, who scored on a 14-yard touchdown run with 3:33 left in the half to give the Buckeyes a 3-TD cushion before Marshall added a score in the final seconds of the half.

Now, Ohio State fans can all laugh about one of the funnier moments of the 2024 season — so far, at least.
