Officially Buckeyes: Two Ohio State newcomers become first to lose black stripes

Two Ohio State freshmen have earned the right to call themselves Buckeyes officially.

On Tuesday, Ohio State’s football program announced that two newcomers have become the first to lose their black stripe this spring. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and defensive lineman Jack Sawyer earned the honor to remove the stripe.

Every player at Ohio State must lose his black stripe to officially call himself a Buckeye, a tradition that dates back to former head coach Urban Meyer. Ryan Day has kept that incentive in place since taking over in 2019.

Both Sawyer and Harrison were members of Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class, which ranked No. 1 in the B1G and No. 2 nationally. They joined the squad for the spring semester to be on campus for the start of spring practices.

Sawyer was the highest-ranked player in the Buckeyes’ class, tabbed as the No. 4 overall prospect in the cycle and the No. 3 defensive end. Harrison was a 4-star prospect who cracked the Top 100, coming in at No. 97 nationally.
