Ohio State assistant linked to vacant Indiana coaching job

Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye could be a candidate to replace Tom Allen at Indiana.
Allen was fired on Sunday shortly after Indiana’s loss to Purdue. According to The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, Frye is among the early candidates to receive interest for the job. Feldman also named South Alabama’s Kane Wommack, Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, Michigan’s Sherrone Moore, and several others.
Frye is in his second season at Ohio State as the offensive line coach and associate head coach. Frye has worked with NFL talent such as Dawand Jones (Cleveland Browns), Luke Wypler (Cleveland Browns), and Paris Johnson Jr. (Arizona Cardinals) while with the Buckeyes.
Frye started his coaching career at Indiana in 2007 as a graduate assistant. Since then, he’s been at Florida (2009-2010), Temple (2011-2012), Boston College (2013-2017), and UCLA (2019-2021) in various assistant roles.
Frye coached the offensive line for an offense that averaged 142.3 yards rushing per game and 282.7 yards passing per game this season. Ohio State ranked first in the Big Ten this season in average yards per play and second in pass yards per play. The Buckeyes allowed the fifth-fewest sacks of any team in the league this season.
Whoever takes over for Allen will have a rebuild on their hands. After a 6-2 season in 2020, Indiana has gone 9-27 over the last three years. That has featured a 3-24 record in conference play.
