Ohio State coach Ryan Day is a big believer in Trey Sermon at the next level.

On Friday morning, Day expressed that belief while he was on “Greeny” with Mike Greenberg. In addition to Sermon’s overall talent and ability, Day called out a specific reason why Sermon has a high upside in the NFL: A lack of wear-and-tear.

“The thing about Trey is, he doesn’t have a lot of mileage on him, does not have a lot of carries,” Day said, via 247Sports. “I think that’s a huge positive for him. I think he has a huge ceiling. I think whoever drafts him is going to get somewhere who is very versatile and runs very hard with low mileage on his body.”

Sermon played four college seasons and was often the starter, but he always shared the load in the backfield. At Oklahoma it was with Rodney Anderson or Kennedy Brooks. At Ohio State, it was with Master Teague.

That meant he never had a season with more than 164 carries throughout his whole college career. Even with his high usage down the stretch with the Buckeyes, he still only carried the ball 116 times for Ohio State in 2020.

For context, Ezekiel Elliott carried the ball 562 times over his last two seasons with the Buckeyes.

Sermon is likely to be a Day 2 or Day 3 pick, depending on how the draft unfolds.

The NFL draft is April 29-May 1.
