Ohio State head coach Ryan Day releases statement on tragic death of Dwayne Haskins

Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day has released a statement on the tragic death of Dwayne Haskins Jr.

Haskins, 24, was killed on Saturday morning in South Florida after being struck by a vehicle. He was training with teammates at the time of the fatal accident.

Haskins was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers after starting his NFL career with the Washington Football Team. He was a first-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft.

“The loss of Dwayne is beyond tragic and extremely difficult to process,” Day said. “For those who knew him closely, he was much more than a great football player. He had a giant heart, old soul and an infectious smile. The Ohio State community and our entire football program are heartbroken.”

Day was the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State in 2018, when Haskins dominated the B1G. He worked with the quarterback for two seasons (2017-18) before Haskins declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

In 2018, Haskins started all 14 games for the Buckeyes, throwing for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns while completing passes at a 70% clip. He was a winner of the B1G Offensive Player of the Year, B1G Quarterback of the Year and was a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Haskins was also named the B1G Championship Game MVP after throwing for 499 yards and 5 touchdowns in a win over Northwestern to claim a conference title. He also earned Rose Bowl MVP honors after throwing for 251 yards and 3 touchdowns to defeat Washington.
