There’s a reason many think Ohio State is currently the best team in college football. The eye test alone makes a strong enough case.

When you look at the statistics, the case is even stronger for the Buckeyes. The first six games of the season have gone incredibly well for the Buckeyes.

According to some research from Eleven Warriors, Ohio State ranks in the top 10 nationally in six major statistical categories. Those areas are:

  • Points per game: 49.3 (4th)
  • Yards per game: 534.5 (8th)
  • Yards per play: 7.31 (7th)
  • Opp. points per game: 8.8 (3rd)
  • Opp. yards per game: 234.0 (3rd)
  • Opp. yards per play: 3.69 (4th)

Ohio State is the only team in the nation to rank in the top 10 of all six categories. That’s pretty impressive. But that’s not where the eye-popping figures end. The Buckeyes also ranked first in points per game differential (40.5), first in yards per game differential (300.5) and third in points per play differential (3.62).

So, yeah, that’s pretty good.

Now, the Buckeyes get the chance to rest for a weekend before a stretch that includes tests against Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan to close the year. We’ll see how the Buckeyes handle those challenges.

Right now, though, Ohio State is the hottest team in the sport. There’s really no disputing that, based on the eye test and these numbers.
