Ohio State has been one of the toughest teams to beat on the football field and on the basketball court this season. On Saturday, the Buckeyes proved it again on the hardwood, registering another major win over a ranked opponent.
No. 5 Ohio State defeated No. 6 Kentucky 71-65 in the CBS Sports Classic in Las Vegas on Saturday to improve to 11-1 on the season. It’s the third time the Buckeyes have defeated a ranked team this season, adding the Wildcats to the likes of Villanova and North Carolina.
Guard D.J. Carlton led the way in scoring for the Buckeyes, scoring 13 points off the bench, making 5-of-6 field goal attempts. Kaleb Wesson added 12 points and eight rebounds and Kyle Young was the third OSU player to reach double figures, ending the night with 10.
Free throws were the big difference in the game, with Ohio State knocking down 21-of-27 attempts from the line. Kentucky shot just 13 free throws and converted only eight. The Buckeyes also won the rebounding battle 33-26 and shot 50 percent from the floor, compared to the Wildcats’ 42.4 percent.
The Buckeyes have lost just one game this season, a Dec. 15 road trip to Minnesota, falling 84-71 to the Golden Gophers. They’re currently part of the 12-way tie for second place in the B1G at 1-1.
Ohio State will be back in action on Sunday, Dec. 29 to play No. 25 West Virginia. The game is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET with coverage on FS1.
