Ohio State was already playing with fire on Saturday afternoon against a stubborn Nebraska team, as the 4th-ranked Buckeyes hung on to a 21-17 lead with the Cornhuskers driving for a potential winning score that would’ve sent the college football world into shock.

Then Ohio State fed into the upset alert by helping Nebraska. With the Cornhuskers backed up at their own 12-yard line and facing a 1st-and-22, Dylan Raiola fired a pass in the direction of Jahmal Banks. The pass was broken up by linebacker Arvell Reese, but Reese did way more than he had to on the play. The sophomore was called for targeting, giving Nebraska some life and some better field position.

Instead of facing a 2nd-and-22 deep in their own territory, the Cornhuskers suddenly had a new set of downs at their own 46-yard line after the review ruled a completed catch for Banks with targeting. Ohio State’s fans didn’t respond well to the call, throwing trash on the field and causing a delay after the call was upheld by review.

Ultimately, it didn’t cost Ohio State in the worst way, as Raiola was intercepted with 1:16 left, preserving a 21-17 victory. But Reese was ejected because of the penalty and will now miss the 1st half of next Saturday’s crucial Big Ten showdown at Penn State.
