Ohio State had to wait a little while, but its second player was finally selected in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Linebacker Pete Werner is a second-round selection in this year’s draft, taken No. 60 overall by the New Orleans Saints. He was the second Buckeye to be picked, with quarterback Justin Fields going No. 11 to the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

Werner was Ohio State’s leading tackler during the 7-1 campaign in 2020, piling up 54 stops on the year. He also had 2.5 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, a pass break up and a sack in eight games.

An Indianapolis native, Werner spent four seasons at Ohio State, winning a B1G title every year he was on the field in Columbus. He left the Buckeyes with 185 total tackles, 16 for loss, 13 passes defended, 4 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries.

Werner was a key piece to an Ohio State linebacker corps that was one of the best in the B1G. The Buckeyes will likely have more players at the position selected in this year’s draft, but Werner is the first.
