Ohio State’s 2026 recruiting class took a hit on Wednesday when a blue-chip in-state defensive back made a surprising announcement.
Jakob Weatherspoon is no longer committed to the Buckeyes. He has decided to play for Bill Belichick, flipping his commitment to North Carolina.
Weatherspoon shared the big news with Hayes Fawcett of On3.
Out of Avon (Ohio) High School, Weatherspoon is listed as measuring 5-10 and 172 pounds. On the 247Sports Composite, Weatherspoon is rated 4-stars, the No. 9 player in the state of Ohio, No. 14 safety and No. 178 prospect overall in the Class of 2026.
Weatherspoon verbally pledged to Ohio State back on Jan. 2. The Tar Heels extended a scholarship offer on Feb. 25. Maryland, UCLA, Indiana and Oregon were other programs to extend offers to Weatherspoon while he was committed to OSU.
While there’s some disappoint in losing one of the top 10 recruits in the state of Ohio, the Buckeyes are still doing well on the recruiting trail. Ohio State currently has 20 verbal commitments for a class that ranks No. 7 nationally on the Composite. Seven of the 20 commits are from in-state prospects.
