One member of Ohio State’s top-ranked recruiting class has decided to reconsider his options.

Three-star Cincinnati cornerback Devonta Smith announced on Twitter on Thursday that he will be decommitting from Ohio State and reopening his recruitment. He had initially given his pledge to the Buckeyes in mid-March.

“First off, I would truly like to thank Coach [Ryan] Day and Coach [Kerry] Coombs, along with the rest of Ohio State’s staff for everything,” Smith wrote. “From the time I joined the family it’s been nothing but love and something I will never forget. I would like to announce that I will be reopening my recruitment. My family and I have chosen to weigh my options and make sure I’m making the best decision for my future.”

Smith, ranked as one of the top 400 players in the 2021 recruiting class, has received a plethora of major offers. Along with Ohio State, schools like Alabama, Oregon, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Oklahoma have shown interest. Many recent Crystal Ball predictions on 247Sports now have the cornerback leaning towards Alabama.

Per 247Sports, Smith ranks as the No. 30 cornerback and No. 12 player out of Ohio for the recruiting cycle. Last season at La Salle High School, Smith totaled 72 tackles, five interceptions and forced two fumbles.

Ohio State’s 2021 class still ranks first nationally.
