Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba explains why record-setting Rose Bowl performance wasn’t a surprise

Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba dialed up an all-time epic performance in Saturday’s Rose Bowl. Playing without fellow receivers Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, Smith-Njigba racked up 15 catches for more than 300 yards with 3 touchdowns.
At this point, it might be easier to list the records Smith-Njigba did not break as opposed to the ones he did. He now holds Ohio State’s single-season records for receptions and receiving yardage and also holds a host of bowl-game records.
After the game, Smith-Njigba was asked on the field if his incredible performance was surprising. He admitted it was not surprising, though his reasons did not stem from arrogance. Quite the opposite, in fact.
“I’m just blessed by God, to be honest,” Smith-Njigba said while discussing his performance. “Opportunities came my way and it’s what I prayed for so I’m not really surprised. I prayed for this. I can’t be surprised for what I prayed for.”

That’s definitely a great attitude and perspective to have for the young star. While Olave and Wilson will be in the NFL next season, Smith-Njigba will be back for 2022, along with fellow young stars Marvin Harrison Jr., Emeka Egbuka, and a host of other fresh faces for the Buckeyes.
