Ohio’s Frank Solich becomes all-time winningest coach in MAC history

Frank Solich has reached a career milestone. In his 15th season as the head coach at Ohio, Solich is now the all-time wins leader in MAC history.
On Tuesday night, Ohio defeated Bowling Green 66-24 to improve to 5-6 this season. But that win was victory No. 111 for Solich as the leader of the Bobcats. That incredible total moves him up to the No. 1 all-time spot in the MAC. He passed for Central Michigan head coach Herb Deromedi, who finished his career with 110 victories.
“It seemed like it stalled itself out a little bit for awhile, but we’re interested in winning football games, and this record goes with it,” said Solich, according to OhioBobcats.com. “I feel really good about it, but a lot of people were involved in this. A lot of great players over the years that have come through Ohio that have set the tradition to where we were able to recruit well and win football games. There have been tremendous athletes and tremendous coaches. If you have that combination, you’re going to have a few wins. A lot of people have been involved in winning some football games, so I appreciate everything that people have been done during my time at Ohio. I will say this, it is as good as I could ever hope for in a coaching business in terms of those 15 years and how it all worked.
Solich began his coaching career at Ohio in 2005. In his 15 seasons with the Bobcats, his teams have finished .500 or better 12 times and the program has gone to a bowl game 10 times. He’s guided Ohio to six 9-plus win seasons and one 10-win year in 2011. He’s also won four MAC East Division titles.
Before taking over at Ohio, Solich was the head coach at Nebraska, his alma mater, from 1998-2003. During that stretch, he posted a 58-19 overall record and the Huskers finished the year ranked in the top 25 five times in his six years. He was a three-time Big 12 North Division champion and won a Big 12 title in 1999.
Ohio has one game remaining on the 2019 schedule, traveling to Akron next Tuesday.
