We’ve finally got something to talk about this week.
Over the last two weeks, the College Football Playoff field has been pretty easy to predict. Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Michigan were the unanimous choices to fill those top four spots. There wasn’t much argument to those picks.
However, after a wild final weekend of the season, we’ve got some debate we’ll encounter this week.
No. 8 Washington State lost to No. 14 Washington. No. 10 Ohio State trounced No. 4 Michigan. No. 6 Oklahoma was pushed to the limit by No. 13 West Virginia. Oh, and don’t forget (overrated) No. 7 LSU was defeated by No. 22 Texas A&M.
So yeah, there’s going to be some serious reshuffling in the top 10 spots this week. But who occupies that fourth spot? That’s really the big question headed into Championship Saturday. Will it be Georgia, Oklahoma or Ohio State?
While SEC Network host Paul Finebaum didn’t particularly weigh in on this week’s upcoming rankings, he does believe that if things play out the way we expect them to, Ohio State belongs in the College Football Playoff.
“I think the committee should put Ohio State in if everything goes to plan,” Finebaum told WJOX on Monday. “Meaning Alabama wins, Clemson wins and then Ohio State wins. It’s a close call…if you’re just looking at snapshots, who are the four best teams under those circumstances, I would take Ohio State over Oklahoma.”
Ideally, Ohio State is hoping for Alabama to hand Georgia its second loss of the season and needs Texas to beat Oklahoma for a second time this year. If that happens and the Buckeyes trump Northwestern, the Buckeyes are a lock for that fourth spot.
If Georgia or Oklahoma win those championship games, though, things could get really interesting.
This could be one of the most anticipated, nerve-wracking Saturdays of the College Football Playoff era.
