Oregon running back to redshirt remainder of 2025 season, per Dan Lanning

After not playing against Penn State, Oregon running back and Tulane transfer Makhi Hughes reportedly asked to redshirt the remainder of this season. Dan Lanning mentioned this to reporters on Wednesday afternoon.
As of October 1, Hughes has not informed Oregon of any plans to enter the transfer portal.
Hughes is the victim of an incredibly deep running back room. The Ducks have 2 rushers over 200 yards so far this season, Dierre Hill and Jayden Limar, plus Jordon Davison, who already has 7 touchdowns on the year as Oregon’s short yardage back.
Last season at Tulane, Hughes was simply magnificent. The former Green Wave RB rushed for 1,401 yards with 15 touchdowns at an average of 5.3 yards per carry. He has a similarly productive freshman year, finishing with 1,378 yards and 7 touchdowns at, once again, 5.3 yards per carry.
So far, that production just has not translated with the above running back room in mind. Hughes will finish his 2025 season with 17 rushing attempts for 70 yards and no trips to the end zone.
Hughes would definitely be an interesting prospect to keep around. Time will tell if the Ducks will be able to keep him on the roster for another run next season.
