Oregon suffered the loss of a commitment on Tuesday as one of its pledged offensive linemen instead opted to sign with BYU, ending a back-and-forth recruiting battle that has lasted for months.

Alai Kalaniuvalu, from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, was originally committed to Oregon in June 2024. However, he flipped his commitment to BYU in November, only to sign an NLI with Oregon during the signing period.

The Cougars, though, have found themselves back in the picture over 5 months later. On Tuesday, Kalaniuvalu, who received a release from his NLI with Oregon, signed with BYU.

Kalaniuvalu is considered the the No. 6 interior offensive lineman in the country and the No. 109 player in the class of 2025 regardless of position, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. His signing with the Cougars makes him the team’s highest-rated recruit in the class.

According to SI, Kalaniuvalu is the brother-in-law of Cougars OL Sonny Makasini. Kalaniuvalu’s father, also named Alai and an offensive guard, was drafted in the 3rd round by the Atlanta Falcons in 1994 out of Oregon State and went on to play 4 seasons in the NFL.

The Ducks’ recruiting class remains one of the best in the country, ranking No. 2 on 247Sports.
