Oregon wide receiver Traeshon Holden barely lasted just over a quarter in the Ducks’ game against Ohio State on Saturday before he was ejected for spitting on an Ohio State player.
Early in the second quarter, Holden spat at Buckeyes cornerback Davison Igbinosun after the two engaged in a bit of a verbal scuffle near the goal line. Holden was ejected and was caught by NBC cameras slamming his helmet in the tunnel leading to the locker room.
On Sunday, Holden posted an apology to social media to his teammates, Oregon fans, Ohio State fans, and Igbinosun.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during our recent game,” he wrote. “My actions were not only disrespectful but also a betrayal of the values of sportsmanship, integrity, and respect that I strive to embody as a student-athlete. … Moving forward, I am committed to making meaningful changes, not only in managing my emotions during competition but in setting a better example for my teammates and the broader community.”
Oregon ultimately won, 33-32, to improve to 6-0 on the season and move into a share of first place in the Big Ten. Holden entered Saturday’s game with 20 catches, 306 yards, and 3 touchdowns.
