Northwestern’s defensive coordinator Mike Hankwitz and Indiana’s defensive coordinator Kane Wommack are among five finalists for the prestigious award. The Broyles Award “was created in 1996 recognizing Coach Frank Broyles’ legacy of selecting and developing great assistants during his hall of fame career at Arkansas.”

Hankwitz oversaw a Wildcats defense that was tremendous in 2020, spearheading Northwestern to an appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game this past Saturday. Equally influential was Wommack for Indiana, his defense a big reason why Indiana is ranked No. 7 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll.
Another finalist, Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, is currently not with a Big Ten team but was a linebacker at Ohio State.
