Pair of B1G players win weekly honors from the Maxwell Football Club

The weekly honors from the Maxwell Football Club had a distinctly Big Ten feel to it, with Ohio State running back Trey Sermon and Wisconsin linebacker Leo Chanel taking home the honors.
Sermon is the Maxwell Award Player of the Week, not really a surprise given his performance this past Saturday in the Big Ten Championship Game. Setting a record for the conference championship, Sermon had 331 rushing yards and two touchdowns in lifting Ohio State to 16 unanswered points in the second half of what would become a 22-10 win over Northwestern.
“QB Justin Fields was off. WR Chris Olave was out. Northwestern was confident. So, Sermon took over the Buckeye offense. The elusive big back, who transferred in from Oklahoma this year, wore down a Wildcat D that did not allow a touchdown for the first 42 minutes of Saturday’s Big Ten Championship Game,” the Maxwell Football Club said in a press release announcing the weekly honor.
The Maxwell Award is given to the nation’s top player. No Big Ten player is a finalist for the award.
The Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week goes to Chanel, who had 11 tackles and two sacks as well as forced fumble for Wisconsin in beating Minnesota this past weekend. The Bednarik Award is handed out to the nation’s top defensive player by the Maxwell Football Club.
“Chenal had the highest pass rushing grade of any Week 16 defender, according to Pro Football Focus,” the club notes.
Last year, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young won the award.
Neither player are finalists for either award
