Pat Fitzgerald and Northwestern are buzzing after a great start to the 2022 college football season. This kind of play was something he didn’t see a lot of last season per Mariah Guzman of 247Sports.

The Wildcats were looking down the barrel of a 28-17 deficit in the 3rd quarter. Then following a questionable onside kick by Nebraska, the team had a surge of energy. Northwestern went on to score 14 unanswered to end the game, in a 31-28 win. Fitzgerald was glad that his team played “the Wildcat way”.

Well, we talk about playing the Wildcat way and that’s to go as hard as you can for as long as you can. And we gave that away a year ago. And we talked at length in the offseason about restoring our pride, and doing the things that we do as Wildcats to win football games. And it’s having great character, having a relentless work ethic and just an unbelievable attitude. I think that we didn’t start off the way we wanted to, we had chances to start faster, but the guys just responded.

After a 3-9 finish last season, this is exactly the kind of start that Northwestern needed. Fitzgerald is hoping that the team will continue to stick together in situations like this.

“They responded boldly, they stuck together, and big time players make big time plays,” said Fitzgerald. “And that’s what we saw today, we had some huge plays, a couple that will probably get talked about a little bit.”
