Big news spread from Madison over the weekend, as Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported that Wisconsin’s returning starting quarterback Jack Coan suffered a foot injury during Saturday’s practice. He’s been ruled out indefinitely.

On Monday, head coach Paul Chryst provided an update on Coan, saying that the quarterback is seeing a specialist soon.

“We’ll know more in the coming days,” Cyrst said, according to Potrykus.

Coan had a strong season at Wisconsin during the 2019 campaign, throwing for 2,727 yards and 18 touchdowns with only 5 interceptions. He also accounted for 4 rushing scores and completed his passes at a 69.6% clip.

Wisconsin finished the season with a 10-4 record, reclaiming its spot atop the B1G West and earning a bid to the Rose Bowl Game.

Chryst also told reporters on Monday that Graham Mertz is taking over the reps with the first-team offense during Coan’s absence. In his second year with the program, Mertz is a former 4-star quarterback and was one of the prized recruits of the 2019 class.

Last year, Mertz completed 9-of-10 passes for 73 yards.

Behind Mertz are Chase Wolf and Danny Vanden Boom.
