With the NFL season entering the final weeks of the season and the college football regular season in the rearview mirror, the coaching carousel, at both levels, is beginning to pick up some serious steam.
Over the course of the football season, former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has been labeled a candidate to the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. And, in an interview with Colin Cowherd earlier this year, Meyer said he would “absolutely” listen to a pitch for that job, calling it one of the premier opportunities in sports.
Right now, the Cowboys are sitting at 6-7 on the year, but are still leading the NFC East because of poor division play across the board. That less-than-impressive record has caused many to speculate that Jerry Jones will part ways with Jason Garrett and start looking for a replacement.
Meyer has been a name often associated with that job. But SEC Network host Paul Finebaum scoffed at the idea, calling it “hilarious” to think a Meyer-Jones relationship in Dallas would work.
“I think it’s one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever heard — the idea of Urban Meyer, who is a perfectionist, who is a freak about everything in control, working in the same operation as Jerry Jones,” Finebaum said. “I would love to see it, because the marriage would not make it to the first game.
Finebaum gave Meyer credit as one of the best college coaches of the time, right behind Nick Saban, but pointed to his inability to relinquish control at Ohio State. That’s what worries Finebaum about the Cowboys job.
“Remember last year, going back to the Zach Smith situation, he could not handle the idea of being suspended for three games. The president wanted him fired, he went crazy. Ultimately, they pushed him out, I think,” Finebaum said. “The idea that Urban Meyer could sit there and listen to Jerry Jones after a preseason game give media interviews, I think would send him over the edge. And listen, I don’t know what his health situation is but it seems like he has used it several times when he has quit.”
