Paul Finebaum outlines criteria that could get Ryan Day fired in 2024

Going 56-8 in your first 64 games as a head coach is nothing to scoff at. But the expectations are simply higher at a program like Ohio State, that has the potential to win a national title year in and year out.
That is something head coach Ryan Day has failed to do over recent history, in addition to not taking down the rival Michigan Wolverines. It is for those reasons that some believe Day could end up without a job sooner rather than later.
ESPN’s Paul Finebaum is among them.
“If he loses to Michigan, which would be four in a row, and somehow gets bounced out of the playoffs… I think the decision could be made to get rid of him,” predicted Finebaum.

Finebaum isn’t the only one who shares this sentiment, as it has been a widely talked-about topic in the college football offseason. It’s clear he has the capacity to lead a successful team that can beat a lot of others, but whether or not he can rise to the occasion for a place with this type of bar set high remains to be seen.
“I hate to say it like this, but I feel like it is national championship or bust for them,” college football analyst Bruce Feldman said this year. “You know people forget they came within a field goal of probably winning the national title (when playing the CFP semifinal against Georgia). I mean, they were up by double digits. (C.J.) Stroud played great and played like what he’s doing in the NFL. And then Marvin Harrison Jr. gets knocked out of the game.”
It will be interesting to watch how things play out as the Buckeyes open the season against Akron on Aug. 31.
