Paul Finebaum isn’t buying what Dan Mullen is trying to sell.
Florida lost a stunner to LSU on Saturday night, falling 37-34 to the Tigers at home in the Swamp. After the game, Mullen was asked about the Gators’ College Football Playoff chances.
He responded by taking aim at the Big Ten’s — and more specifically, Ohio State — schedule, which has the 5-0 Buckeyes in the conference title game this weekend.
“You know what I mean? I know we’ve played 10 games, right? So, I guess probably the best thing to do would’ve been to play less games because you seem to get rewarded for not playing this year in college football,” Mullen said.
Mullen seemed to be making the point that the Gators should still make the Playoff if they’re able to beat Alabama next weekend.
However, Finebaum shot that notion down pretty quickly on Sunday morning’s SportsCenter.
“I apologize for quoting Macbeth so early on a Sunday morning, but that’s a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing,” Finebaum said. “First of all, that’s the second loss for the Gators. They lost to Texas A&M and now they’ve lost at home as a 23-point favorite to LSU, a team that has really done nothing this season. It was a huge rivalry game. They were sloppy. Kyle Trask made mistakes. The unforgivable shoe penalty, but if Ohio State and Florida were to meet, I would take Ohio State, Coach Mullen. I think you’re a great coach. I love you, but you’re going nowhere with that argument.”
With Florida’s loss, it does seem even more likely OSU will be in the playoff with a win over Northwestern on Saturday. With the Pac-12 and Big 12 virtually out of the hunt, there’s not many options to replace the Buckeyes if the committee were to take issue with the number of games played.
Ohio State and Northwestern kick off at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday.
