It seems like we have this debate every year, doesn’t it? At the end of each college football season, there’s some conversation about whether the national champion of that year was the best team in the history of the sport.
The discussion is driving at full speed again this year. After Alabama cruised to a 52-24 victory over Ohio State in Monday night’s national championship, there’s an argument to be made that this year’s Crimson Tide team is the best to ever play the game.
Paul Finebaum believes that might be the case.
“Easily,” Finebaum said on Get Up, when asked if this was Nick Saban’s best team to win a title. “Just the offense alone answers the prize. I mean, he’s had better defenses, that goes without saying. He’s had some of the greatest defenses in college football history. But this offense is unparalleled.
“I think what’s going to make this more special for Nick Saban and college football is the struggle to get here. Countless times, we talked about whether we’d get to the first game, let alone the last game. And even a lot of people who thought we’d get to the first game never dreamed we’d get to Monday night. So, this is one of the most remarkable stories I have ever seen in the history of college football.
Alabama finished the 2020 season with a perfect 13-0 record, playing an SEC-only schedule in the regular season, then beating Florida in the conference title game. The Crimson Tide then defeated Notre Dame 31-14 in the Rose Bowl before pummeling Ohio State.
Monday night’s championship victory was the seventh of Saban’s coaching career.
