Penn State DE out for 2023 season due to injury, per report

There was some unfortunate news to report on Sunday about a Penn State player. The Athletic’s Audrey Snyder reported that someone’s has ended due to injury.

Smith Vilbert was projected to be in the rotation at defensive end this season, but it looks like he will be missing the entire year. Smith Vilbert appeared in one game for the Nittany Lions last season, playing in the Rose Bowl against Utah.

Penn State went on to win that game by a score of 35-21.

One of Vilbert’s best seasons came in 2021. Vilbert recorded 3 sacks, 4 tackles for loss, and 7 total tackles.

The exact injury that Vilbert suffered is unknown. Vilbert has played in 7 total games for Penn State in his career.

Vilbert was a member of the 2019 class. Vilbert was listed as a 3-star SDE per the 247Sports Composite out of Montvale, New Jersey. He was ranked at No. 38 for his position and No. 14 from the state of New Jersey.

Penn State opens the season against West Virginia on Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
