Penn State added to its linebacking corps on Tuesday as it picked up a commitment from one of the ACC’s top players at that position.
Amare Campbell, who spent 2 seasons at North Carolina before entering the transfer portal, has committed to the Nittany Lions, according to a report via his agent through 247Sports.
Campbell, a Northern Virginia native, signed with the Tar Heels out of the class of 2023. As a true freshman, he made 14 tackles and 2 tackles for a loss while being credited with 1.0 sacks and an interception. He made a massive leap as a sophomore, totaling 76 tackles, 11 TFLs, and 6.5 sacks while forcing a fumble.
After Mack Brown and North Carolina parted ways, Campbell opted to enter the transfer portal as he considered continuing his career elsewhere. He decided to return to the program after the hiring of Bill Belichick but re-entered the portal in the spring.
Campbell now joins the Penn State roster, adding to a position group that has lost star Abdul Carter, Kobe King, Tyler Elsdon, and Ta’Mere Robinson from last year’s College Football Playoff team. The program saw another LB, Beckham Dee, enter the portal after 1 season.
Tony Rojas, who posted 58 tackles and 3 interceptions, is the top returning LB, along with Dominic DeLuca.
