The most visible update came at the running back position, where it was announced on Monday redshirt junior Journey Brown, the program’s leading rusher in 2019 with 890 yards, could be sidelined for the duration of the season because of an undisclosed medical condition.
In Brown’s absence, Noah Cain moved to the top of the list. A sophomore from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who finished his prep career at Bradenton, Florida’s IMG Academy, Cain played in 10 games a year ago, running for 443 yards and eight touchdowns, the latter of which is a record for Penn State freshmen.
The other notable name missing is would-be junior outside linebacker Micah Parsons, who opted-out of the season and announced his intention to enter the 2021 NFL Draft on August 6.
Junior tight end Pat Freiermuth and redshirt senior defensive end Shaka Toney are the two returnees who received All-Big Ten recognition last fall.
Saturday’s battle with the Hoosiers, who went 8-5 (5-4 Big Ten) in 2019, will kick at 3:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
