Penn State’s baseball team pitched a no-hitter…and lost

Penn State’s pitching staff suffered one of the most brutal losses imaginable on Friday.
The Nittany Lions kicked off a three-game weekend on Friday with a contest against Navy in Annapolis. Pitchers Bailey Dees, Tyler Shingledecker and Mason Mellott were outstanding in the game, combining for a no-hitter — the 10th recorded in Penn State’s history.
But it still wasn’t enough to knock off the Midshipmen. Penn State fell 2-1 to Navy in an 11-inning contest. Navy used five walks and two errors to cross home plate twice on Friday, just enough to get the victory.
Dees went six innings for the Nittany Lions, allowing one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. He had four walks, hit one batter and recorded two strikeouts before being pulled. Shingledecker took over for the next 2.2 innings, throwing five strikeouts and just one walk. He did not allow a run.
Mellott got the loss, allowing one run while facing six batters.
Friday’s no-hitter was the first for Penn State since 2012. The Nittany Lions fell to 9-3 on the season with the loss, and have UMBC and Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
