Pro Football Focus does an excellent job at grading players and providing next-level analysis. Facts are facts and PFF gives exactly that.

On Monday, it announced its rankings of all 130 offensive lines in the FBS and there were six lines from the Big Ten that made up the top 16:

  1. Oregon
  2. Georgia
  3. Alabama
  4. Ohio State
  5. Kentucky
  6. Iowa
  7. Clemson
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Louisiana
  10. Washington
  11. Illinois
  12. BYU
  13. Notre Dame
  14. Penn State
  15. Oregon State
  16. Michigan

Again, nearly half of the top 16 consists of Big Ten teams. There’s a pretty common thread among these teams, too. They were all quality programs this season and some, of course, were elite.

Teams like Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin seem to always have good line play. And this year, Illinois surprised many teams. Why?

Look at the big uglies up front.

Penn State and Michigan both had quality seasons as well. Go figure.

The game of football has been and always will be won at the line of scrimmage. You don’t need the best offensive and defensive lines in the country to win, but being able to win up front gives you an excellent chance to win over the course of a 60-minute game.
