The Boilermakers will be down a guard as they face the Milwaukee Panthers in the season opener on Tuesday.

According to a Purdue announcement on Twitter, David Jenkins Jr. will miss the game due to a black eye that he suffered in practice. The Boilermakers called the injury “one of the worst” they’ve seen, but stopped short of detailing exactly how Jenkins sustained the injury.

Jenkins, a transfer from Utah, averaged 8.5 points for the Utes last season while hitting 53 3-pointers. Prior to last season, Jenkins played at UNLV, where he was , Jenkins was 3rd-team All-Mountain West, scoring 14.8 points per game.

Jenkins fills an important gap in the Purdue backcourt, where the Boilermakers needed another point guard option and scorer.  Jenkins has a career true shooting percentage of 57.3%, and is a 79.9% free-throw shooter.

Tuesday’s game is airing on the Big Ten Network.
