Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm has revealed which players will be team captains for the season opener against Iowa on Saturday.
Linebacker Derrick Barnes will be the defensive team captain while tight end Payne Durham will be the offensive team captain this weekend. The Boilermakers host the Hawkeyes on Saturday, Oct. 24 to open the 2020 season.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
Brohm said that Purdue will have new team captains each week throughout the season. Teams typically take one of two approaches: either naming team captains for the entirety of the season or rotating each week.
While the Boilers are looking forward to beginning the 2020 season on Saturday, they’ll be without their head coach on the sideline. Brohm teste positive for COVID-19 over the weekend, ruling him out of Saturday’s game, as he’s not permitted to be with the team for a minimum of 10 days.
Co-offensive coordinator Brian Brohm will be the acting head coach during that time. However, Purdue has filed an appeal, hoping that Jeff Brohm will be able to have communication with the coaches box during Saturday’s game.
Purdue is 2-1 against Iowa over the last three seasons, though the Hawkeyes defeated the Boilermakers in 2019 26-20.
