When Purdue takes the field against Nevada on Friday night in Reno, defensive coordinator Nick Holt won’t be running out of the tunnel. Instead, he’ll be making his way to the press box.
Mike Carmin of the Journal & Courier tweeted out that Holt will be calling the defense from the press box on Friday night, as the Boilermakers battle the Wolf Pack. It’s a change head coach Jeff Brohm wanted to make in order to see if there’s any benefit.
“Coach made the decision and wants to see that. So we’ll do it,” Holt told Carmin.
Nick Holt will call #Purdue's defense from the press box Friday at Nevada. Last time Holt was upstairs?
"Oh, wow. Long time ago."

Holt admitted that it’s been a long time since he last called a game from the press box. In his first two seasons at Purdue, he’s been on the sidelines giving his group energy in every game.

The defense is expected to be the strongpoint for the Boilermakers this fall, returning plenty of talent and production on that side of the football. Brohm has said throughout fall camp that the defense has been consistently winning battles against the offense, but there are still too many big plays surrendered and mental mistakes have piled up.
Perhaps moving Holt to the press box will allow Purdue to remedy some of those big plays, but we’ll see how it plays out.
The Boilers enter Friday’s game against Nevada as a 10-point favorite. Purdue is 0-2 in season openers under Brohm.
