Purdue lands QB for class of 2026 with commitment from blue chip California prospect

Purdue has secured its first commitment for the 2026 recruiting class, landing a key quarterback prospect in the process.

With a lot of the attention still placed on the 2025 recruiting class, the Boilermakers struck early with a commitment from Oscar Rios, a 4-star QB out of California. The rest of Rios’ early offer list includes Auburn, Arizona, Michigan State, Nebraska, Washington, Utah and Virginia Tech, among others.

Rios is listed at 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds out of Downey High School in California. The 247 Sports Composite rates Rios as a 4-star recruit, the 18th QB nationally in the 2026 recruiting cycle and the 28th overall player out of California.

Rios is the first commitment for Purdue and head coach Ryan Walters in the 2026 recruiting class, but he’s a key piece to jumpstart the cycle.

Impact for Purdue

Ryan Walters will need to show he can put together a complete roster at Purdue, but he has been able to recruit some strong talent at the QB position in the early portion of his tenure.

In the transfer portal, Walters and his staff were able to land former Texas QB Hudson Card to help engineer a turnaround. Card performed well in 2023 and is looking to make a jump this fall.

From the high school recruiting trail, Walters’ staff landed 4-star QB Marcos Davila out of Texas in the class of 2024. Davila is another blue chip QB and was rated the 27th overall QB for his class.
