Purdue head coach Jeff Brohm has officially announced two new additions to his coaching staff for the 2021 season. David Elson has been hired to be the quality control coach while Mel Mills has been hired to be the director of player development.

In the announcement, Brohm was very happy to add both to his staff:

“I’m very pleased to have these two outstanding individuals join the staff,” Brohm said. “They fit perfectly with our desire to bring in not only outstanding football minds but people of high character, as well. I know they will work well with our student-athletes and staff.”

Before coming to Purdue, Elson was the head coach at Western Kentucky from 2003-2009 and spent the 2020 season as the defensive coordinator at Marion University. He also coached the inside linebackers there, too.

Western Kentucky wasn’t the only school where Elson was the defensive coordinator for a period of time. He’s also held the same position at Western Illinois, Southern Illinois, and New Mexico State.

As for Mills, he’s coming to Purdue after spending the last two seasons as the assistant head coach and academics coordinator at Kentucky Wesleyan College. His duties included: coaching the defensive line, recruiting, monitoring the team’s academic progress, and helping to oversee the conduct and image of the student-athletes.

Purdue will open their season with a non-conference matchup against Oregon State on Sept. 4.
