Purdue’s first home game of the 2019 season is going to be an emotional one.
On Saturday at 10 a.m., just a few hours before kickoff, Purdue will unveil and dedicate the Tyler Trent Student Gate at Ross-Ade Stadium. Special guest speakers will include head football coach Jeff Brohm, president Mitch Daniels and Trent’s parents, Tony and Kelly.
But Purdue is planning a little something extra on Saturday when the Boilermakers host Vanderbilt. The day would’ve been Trent’s 21st birthday, so fans at Ross-Ade Stadium will be celebrating in a special way.
Based on some interactions on Twitter, it appears as if fans will be singing “Happy Birthday” at the end of the first quarter of Saturday’s game to celebrate Trent. It’s just another examle of the impact Trent had on the Purdue community, and how many lives he touched with his story.

Trent was a former Purdue student, superfan and team captain. He used the final months of his life to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and his impact was made across the nation.

The new Tyler Trent Student Gate was the same gate where Trent camped out before Purdue’s 2017 game against Michigan, and where he first met Brohm. After the gate is dedicated and the ceremony concludes, Trent’s parents will be the first to pass through the gate.
Purdue will then have its home opener at 12 p.m. What an incredible way to start the season.
