Purdue’s 14-12 loss to Rutgers on Saturday didn’t sit well with a lot of people.

The Boilermakers were nearly double-digit favorites heading into the cross-division clash this weekend, but they couldn’t quite muster enough offense to escape Piscataway with win. There were a lot of mistakes and several missed opportunities that really hindered Purdue’s chances.

But Purdue running back D.J. Knox thinks there might be another issue.

Nathan Baird of the Journal and Courier asked Knox about how the locker room handled the fact that the defense played pretty well on Saturday while the offense struggled.

“We have to make sure we identify the guys that are all in and the guys that are going to put it on the line,” Knox said. “We come out and we work every day, but comes a time and a point when you’ve got to put the pedal to the metal.”

Knox didn’t call anyone out and there wasn’t any real bashing in his comments, but his frustration can be sensed, especially after losing such a winnable game.

Purdue has played with more energy and intensity every week under new head coach Jeff Brohm, but all that was absent on Saturday.

It’ll be interesting to see how the Boilermakers play next week in a home contest against Nebraska.
