Purdue has struggled in the first 2 years of the Ryan Walters era, but the program is expected to grant more time — at least the 2025 season — to its young head coach.
That news comes via ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who broke down several hot seat situations in a story on Friday. The Boilermakers are just 5-14 over Walter’s first 19 contests as their head coach.
Here’s an excerpt from Thamel’s assessment of the situation in West Lafayette:
Ryan Walters is only in his second season there, and he’s expected to get more time. The administration there realizes it has been behind the Big Ten median in NIL and is expected to be supportive of helping Walters through the struggles of his early tenure.
Thamel’s report also says that there is “administrative empathy” for Walters after the program lost arguably its 2 best players — Nic Scourton (Texas A&M) and Deion Burks (Oklahoma) — to SEC teams this past offseason.
Thamel also pointed to a significant buyout as a reason why Walters is expected to get a third season at the helm. Per his report, it would cost Purdue almost $9.3 million to fire Walters after the 2024 season.
Purdue is off in Week 9 but will be in search of its first Big Ten win of the year on Nov. 2 against Northwestern.
