QB Kyle McCord the latest to become an official Buckeye after shedding black stripe

Buckeyes quarterback Kyle McCord has become an official Buckeye as he’s gotten rid of the black stripe on his helmet.

This tradition has been in place since Urban Meyer was at Ohio State and Ryan Day decided to keep it after he took over. All new recruits and transfers practice with a black stripe on their helmet and when they’ve earned the right to be a Buckeye, it gets removed.

McCord’s time came Thursday as Ohio State tweeted it from their official Twitter account for football.

In the video, McCord speaks about what this means to him:

“It’s a blessing to be here and be part of the brotherhood,” said McCord. “Shoutout to the defense for pushing me every single day offensive line protecting me, zone 6 doing your thing, and tote nation helping me out. Shoutout to the unit and go Bucks!”

The Buckeyes then followed that tweet up with a couple of pictures of McCord holding his black stripe after getting it taken off.

Before committing to the Buckeyes, McCord was labeled as a 5-star recruit out of Pennsylvania and the 6th best quarterback in the country for the 2021 class per 247Sports.

He’s got as good of a shot as anyone to start for the Bucks this season as this quarterback competition is only beginning.
